Bilgemunky Pirate Trivia Contest

The first-ever Bilgemunky Trivia Contest ended on January 1, 2004. The winner, Lord Wilson, correctly answered 6 out of 10 questions. He will be richly rewarded with a prize package containing (but not limited to) CDs by Captain Bogg and Salty and The Ben Gunn Society, as well as a totally piratey shirt of his choice from PirateMod. Be sure and look for more exciting prizes in future contests!

The Questions and Answers:
(answers in bold)

1) To open the giant monkey head, use a giant Q-Tip.

In The Secret of Monkey Island, Guybrush Threepwood utilizes a giant Q-Tip to open the giant monkey head in his search for LeChuck's ship

2) How do you prefer your cheese?Toasted

In Treasure Island, the maroon Ben Gunn expresses a longing for cheese, mostly toasted.

3) Name this famous "pirate". Pete Burns

In the 80's, Pete Burns was lead singer for the pop band Dead or Alive, famous for songs like "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record, Baby)".

4) What television pirate was originally to be named "Anthrax"? Don Karnage

The captain of the air pirates in Disney's Tailspin was originally to be named Anthrax. Believe it or not, a couple of people actually answered this one correctly.

5) When heaving lines, a pirate might enlist the aid of a monkey's fist.

Basic nautical terminology here. I accepted "paw" as well, since many people answered paw and I expect the terms are probably interchangeable.

6) Which pirate did Alf hunt? Alwilda

I admit this was something of a trick question, although at least one contestant wasn't fooled. The Alf in question isn't an obnoxious alien from Melmack, but rather the historical Prince Alf of Denmark, who hunted down (and eventually married) the Scandinavian pirate Alwilda in the 5th century.

7) Otis is the king of Scamalot.

The ONLY question that absolutely nobody answered correctly, and I'm ashamed of you all. Go to Pirate Jenny's website right now and buy both their CD's. Get the tapes as well, just to be on the safe side. You might not feel like spending the money, but it's really for your own good. Trust me.

8) The Highlander decapitated Blackbeard.

Any student of pirate history who didn't know this one should be smacking their head right now. Many people answered "Kurgen" or "immortals," but what the hell does that have to do with pirates? In the pirate Blackbeard's final battle, he was neatly decapitated by a Scottsman (referred to as a "highlander" in at least a few books, if memory serves.) It's a fact - look it up.

9) Fill in the blank: "Jesus said, 'tis easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle
than for an officer to enter the kingdom of heaven."

One of my favorite lines in Roman Polanski's Pirates, said by Captain Redd himself.

10) Before a battle, pirates frequently drank Nelson's blood.

Another headsmacker, I'd expect. Actually quite a few folks knew this one. Nelson's blood is synonymous with rum ever since the famous Admiral Nelson's corpse was preserved in a cask of the stuff.
