Bilgemunky 2005 News Archives

12/8/05

- Broadway will soon be featuring a musical about the life of Grace O'Mally. It will first play in Chicago, and then New York. Details are sketchy thus far, but I'm sure they'll fill out as we get closer!

- A new line of toys is being produced of Pirate of the Caribbean THE RIDE! Check them out at Wizard Universe, and then head to Disneyworld or Disneyland, because those appear to be the only places they'll be available. (While you're at it, pick me up a figure of the drunk pirate with the pigs, ok?)

- You probably already know this, but you can now view the trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. It looks great, but we already knew that ;)

- Head over to one of Bilgemunky's favorite ports, Captain Jack's Pirate Hats. He's dramatically expended his line, most notably with a selection of 18th century hats that are a notch fancier than his other styles.

Bilgemunky.com Updates:

- Posted several reviews: Dogfish Head Brown Honey Rum, the music CD Maiden Voyage, Silhuettes Pirate Hair Beads, the scholarly book Rum: A Social and Sociable History of the Real Spirit of 1776, and the godawful movie Crossbones.
- Linked Keep to the Code, an outstanding resource for all things related to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
- Posted several news items, including a note that Captain Jack's Pirate Hats has expanded his line with some fantastic new products!
- Posted a very fun update to the Flying Dutchman site. Our most recent recipient, The Pirate Captain, was kind enough to document his prize packages arrival!

- I've learned of two new pirate games in the works, both currently in alpha testing. The first is Crown and Cutlass, which looks to be an online third-person ship style game. The second is Booty Duty, a very cute third-person console game, in which you play a hook-legged pirate who can fly for short distances (thanks to the parrot mounted on your shoulder.)

- It seems the Hallmark Channel is currently producing a mini-series about Blackbeard. Hopefully this will be awsome, but... Hallmark???

- Eat Kellogg's and get a Pirates of the Caribbean Computer Mouse! Apparently you can also get "special pirate powers," but that just confuses me.

- I'm always excited to learn about a new rum - and to learn of one that's produced here in the continenetal US is a special treat! Check out Pirchard's Distillery in Tennessee :)

- While we're on th subject, Gosling's Rum has recently revamped their own website, and it looks fantastic! Plus they seem to promoting their "Old Rum," which I'm very much looking forward to trying.

- So it seems that Disney will be refurbishing the Pirates of the Caribbean Rides to better reflect events and characters from the movies. I loved the movie, and I expect I'll love the sequels, but I hate to see such a classic ride changed for any reason. However, they seem to have forgotten to ask my opinion on the matter.

Bilgemunky.com Updates:

- Reviewed two new books. The first is Scurvy, which is a wonderful account of everyone's favorite pirate disease, and the quest of it's cure. The second is Drake, an informative but rather distant account of the famous Elizabethan sea dog.
- Reviewed another fine item from Center Stage Costumes. Their Plumed Tricon is definitely a sight to behold.

- Lordy oh lordy. You know pirates must be in style when Trashy.com features a full 30 different pirate outfits. Some classier than others, some trashier, but all quite piratey and (ahem) effective.

- While I've decided not to post every little newsbit that comes out about the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels (indeed, I'd never get to leave my computer, and most rumors go back and forth between confirmed and denied anyways.) But I do think this picture of Davy Jones seemed worth sharing.

- Captain Jack's Pirate Hats has updated its catalogue - not only with pictures of their hats in multiple colors (which look fantastic, by the way,) but also with a couple new styles, "The Mackay" and "The Marooned Captain." He also now sells the fabled "Dread Pirate" game at one of the best prices I've seen.

- Six Flags in Illinois is about to open its new waterpark, Hurricane Harbor, complete with a huge pirate-themed kids' section, Skull Island, which appears to be an enourmous structure of slides, shipwrecks, and (of course) a giant skull. You can see it for yourself by checking out the artist rendering.

- IC Wales recently published an interesting article claiming that Wales was the true home of pirates.

- Pirates of the Burning Sea has just launched its new website, complete with images of a couple possible avatars. When first announced I'd envisioned a game of incredible player vs. player sea battles, but it's now looking like it will also feature some fantastic shore play - I'm really getting excited about this one!

- Grandplace is developing a pirate-themed game called Jolly Roger. Not much news on this yet, but you can view a couple of screenshots and try a small demo at their website. It seems to be a party-style game featuring pirate worms, but I can't say for certain. (Thanks to Pirates Ahoy! for bringing this one to my attention!)

- In yet another day-late-dollar-short effort to merchandise Pirates of the Caribbean, Disney has announced a PotC themed online game. It's due to launch in Summer of 06, so I'll try to keep tabs on this and see if it might be worth anything.

- Like Jimmy Neutron? Like Pirates? Speak Spanish? Then check out Piratas en el Callao, the new Peruvian 3D animated film. It looks gorgeous. If you know where you can snag a copy in the States (legally, please. I'm not endorsing piracy [oh, the irony]) then do let me know! If you're inclined, then check out the preview online.

- At last - a magazine for the modern pirate. AHOY THERE! Life and Fashion on the High Seas is overflowing with wit and goodis, but if you're under 18 you might need to cover your eyes just a little.

- Oshkosh, Wisconsin, will soon be the pirate capitol of the midwest (oooooh!) Their public museum will be hosting a wide range of pirate artifacts June through October of this year.

- Heading to Dollywood? If so, make sure to stop by Gatlinburg to visit the Ripley's Aquarium, which has just opened an exhibit called "Pirates: Predators of the Sea".

- A couple of Captain Morgan statues were stolen in Arizona. The first was readily returned, but the second was kept for torture until the rightful owners doneated $2,000 to childrens' charities. No, I'm not kidding.

- Naomi Harris has signed aboard to play a gypsy queen in the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean. Actor Stellan Skarsgard has signed on as well, in his case playing Bootstrp Bill (hows that for a juicy tidbit?)

- So it seems some guy is suing Disney, claiming they stole the plot from Pirates of the Caribbean from him. I don't know enough details to judge, but knowing how many sue-happy folks are out there, I'd consider his story with a healthy dose of salt.

- Ubisoft will be publishing Puzzle Pirate in what appears to be an expanded version of the current online game. Not only will you be able to buy the game in stores in an ACTUAL BOX (in case that's important to you) but it will also include additional features, such as special items and offline versions of some of the puzzles.

- I'm about sick of PotC 2 rumors about Keith Richards - one reliable source says yes, another says no, the cycle never stops. Well, according to a Disney employee that I feel is completely on the up-and-up, and confirmed by other rumor mills of varying reliablility, Keith Richards is NOT in Pirates of the Caribbean, part deux. Also, the new working title is "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"

- It seems that Disney is now looking to build a Pirates of the Caribbean Water Park, which seems only natural, I suppose.

- Happy New Year, ya pelicans!

-Gwen Stefani has officially joined our numbers with the introduction of her new video, Rich Girl. Gwen gets all gussied-up pirate style while dancing around on a galleon (except for scenes where she's dancing around in her under-things - but that's ok with us :)

- Pirate Soul, Key West's new pirate museum, is now officially open for business. They have tons of genuine pirate artifacts, as well as Blackbeard's own decapitated head telling stories (although rumor has it that's an animatronic.)
