The reason for this is largely that they're fur felt - most pirate hats are wool felt. Fur is considered a nicer, higher quality product, and I believe it's also more weather resistant. For your average pirate, a wool felt hat is just fine. And even better if it's tarred a bit. But for something fancy, fur felt is a nice way to show off your success to your shipmates :) Indeed, Israel, the Center Stage hats are quite pricey.
