Whoa, momma! Many sources call this the “Cognac of Rums.” Now, I don’t know much about cognac, but I know a little about rum. And THIS is rum! Made by a family of Cuban exiles in the Dominican Republic, this 15 year old rum is not for the squeamish. This rum tastes like rum, and it has bite. If you’re not ready for it, you might lose an eye (and then you could wear a patch, which would be awsome!) Probably the best and truest rum I’ve tasted since Blackbeard’s Reserve (the 25 year, not that cursed 26 rotgut.) Additionally, this may well be the closest you can legally get to a true Cuban rum, which makes it even more worthwhile. Put it on your shopping list.
Just bought a bottle. This may not be as smooth as Mt. Gay XO or Cruzan. And definitely not as refined or sophisticated as Zacapa.
But this is as substantial as rum could get! This is rums’ rum. My new favorite.
Indeed, after a 5 years of Rums drinking experience here in New York, I found Ron Matusalem is my favorite rum. Believe me or not I have consumed a lot since I switched out from vodka. The only a problem for me and my friends now is to find it on shelves. Interesting and strange things happened : no one official distributor has returned my e-mail inquiry about this product absence in NYC, NJ or CT. 50% of my on0line inquiries were returned as “undelivered” regardless of the fact I used to copy and paste e-mail addresses. Last year I was waiting for 5 !!!!! months to be able to buy it from a grand liqueur retailer on Coney Island. The test of the product has changed to more sharp after that 5 months period. I ahve no idea what is going on around that rum here in USA.
