Alestorm: Bring in the pirates!

Pirate-Core legends Alestorm are now being discussed in college newspapers, which means they’re officially culture-ish. Actually, I’m not sure I’ve ever gotten around to reviewing their second full length album Black Sails at Midnight. If not, go buy the damned thing already.

Keelhauled Video – Sweet!!!!

Scottish Pirate Metal heroes Alestorm have released a video of the song Keelhauled from their latest album Black Sails at Midnight (which, if possible, might be even better than their first album Captain Morgan’s Revenge.) It takes all types to make a world, but I admit that I strongly favor the type of pirate metal where you can actually understand the lyrics, and nobody does it better than Alestorm. Enjoy!

Alestorm’s Captain Morgan’s Revenge every bit appears the standard pirate metal album – the front cover features a skeletal demonic pirate screaming into the eye of a storm, while the back is emblazoned with an original jolly roger over a compass rose and crossed pistols. The packaging is definitely piratey. But as we know, the very nature of metal sometimes make for an album whose cover is the only thing that’s clearly piratey. All too often the typical thrasher growls and yells of “yarrr wahhhh grrrramoad!” could just as easily be “singing” of devil pigs as they might of pirates. This is the crux of pirate metal – but not so with Alestorm. Continue reading
