Vampirates – is there a combination of archtypes that were ever more perfect to be merged? Actually, I generally think yes. Despite the play on words made possible in their names, vampires and pirates seem to have very little room for creative overlap. Pirates drink rum, vampires drink blood. Pirates suntan, vampires burst into flames. Pirates spread joy and sunshine wherever they go, vampires spread only misery and despair. See? Incompatible. And yet, author Justin Somper actually does a decent job of bringing these two entities together into a relatively cohesive and entertaining package. Continue reading

I just finished reading Vampirates by Justin Somper, so it was funny timing to stumble across this interview:

Enjoy the article, and read the book – just don’t get all wrapped up in becoming a vampirate someday, as it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. When they talk about drinking Nelson’s Blood, it’s *not* a euphemism for rum. Can you even imagine such a thing??? Also, blood stains don’t wash from your frock nearly as readily as does rum, so there’s that as well.
